Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei hit out at Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) for reversing their decision to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Speaking on Wednesday, Cherargei expressed concern that the impeachment drama in Nairobi risked eroding the credibility of the County Assembly.
He called the impeachment bid “a serious fluke and political blunder,” arguing that starting a process to remove a county leader and then backing off tarnishes the name of the Assembly.
“To Nairobi MCAs, that was a serious fluke and political blunder that shall cost the integrity of the operations of the Nairobi City County Assembly,” Cherargei cautioned.
“Impeachment proceedings are a political process. They are neither civil nor criminal. The threats to Governor Sakaja were hot, but didn’t have a noble intention of accountability.”
Cherargei’s remarks followed behind-the-scenes political negotiations that led Nairobi MCAs to suspend their impeachment push against Governor Johnson Sakaja. After interventions by President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga, the MCAs agreed to pause the motion for 60 days to give Sakaja time to “get his house in order.”
In his criticism, Cherargei urged the MCAs to use the 60-day window to make a firm decision, suggesting that moving ahead with impeachment was the only way to restore public trust in the Nairobi County Assembly.
“To Nairobi City County MCAs, 60 days shall lapse, and you shall do nothing about it unless you impeach the governor!” Cherargei declared.
