Nairobi, Kenya – September 5, 2025 – Kenya’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially ended on Friday night after suffering a 3-1 defeat to The Gambia’s Scorpions in a CAF Group F qualifier at Kasarani Stadium.

The Gambians, coached by former Gor Mahia tactician Jonathan McKinstry, dominated the first half with ruthless efficiency, leaving Benni McCarthy’s Harambee Stars chasing shadows.

Kenya’s defensive lapses were punished early when Sulayman Sinyan headed home in the 12th minute from a corner by Brighton & Hove Albion winger Yankuba Minteh. Minteh then doubled the lead in the 26th minute, capitalizing on a midfield error before slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

The Gambia extended their advantage in the 38th minute as Musa Barrow fired a stunning volley past the Kenyan goalkeeper, effectively sealing the game before halftime.

Kenya’s frustrations grew when defender Collins Sichenje was booked in stoppage time for a reckless challenge, with coach McCarthy visibly exasperated on the touchline.

The second half saw improved urgency from Harambee Stars following tactical substitutions, and substitute Ryan Ogam pulled one back in the 81st minute. However, it was too little, too late, as The Gambia comfortably saw out the match.

The result leaves Kenya stuck on six points in Group F, mathematically ending their 2026 World Cup dream with three games still remaining.

For The Gambia, the victory reignites their qualification hopes, though they still face tough fixtures against Burundi and Gabon. Kenya, meanwhile, will now focus on Tuesday’s home clash against Seychelles, as attention slowly shifts towards preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign.
