Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested the prime suspect in the murder of 18-year-old Faith Kemunto, whose disappearance and death shocked Nyamira in July 2025.
Kemunto, who was preparing to join Machakos University, had returned home from Nairobi on July 27. That same day, she reportedly left to meet her boyfriend, identified as Gidion Angisa, but never returned.
Her family later reported her missing at Nyamuri Police Station after frantic search efforts failed to trace her.
Investigations revealed that Angisa had fled to Huruma estate in Nairobi, where detectives eventually tracked him down. He was arrested while in possession of Kemuntoโs mobile phone.
Following his arrest, Angisa was transferred to Nyamira and is currently being detained at Ekerenyo Police Station.
Detectives later recovered a body believed to be Kemuntoโs, buried in a shallow roadside grave. The remains were exhumed under a court order issued by the Nyamira Law Courts.
DCI officers have since obtained a 21-day custodial order to complete investigations. The case is being pursued by homicide detectives, forensic experts from the DCI National Forensic Laboratory, and officers based in Nyamira.
Cases of murders involving university students have caused worry amongst society before. In April this year,ย Philip Eric Mutinda, the main suspect in the murder of Multimedia University (MMU) student Sylvia Kemunto, turned himself in to the police at Sultan Hamud in Makueni County.
Mutinda, a first-year Electrical Engineering student at MMU, is suspected of being responsible for Kemuntoโs death. Her body was foundย inside a water tankย on the rooftop of a hostel within the university compound.
Nairobi Police Commander George Sedah stated that the suspect turned himself in at the Sultan Hamud police station in Makueni on Thursday night, April 3, after being connected to the murder of Kemunto.
The suspect had been evading capture since last Monday, when he allegedly killed Kemunto and later disposed of her body in a water tank at the university just hours after the murder.
