A University of Nairobi (UoN) student has been taken into custody for allegedly stabbing his roommate to death after a dispute over cleaning their hostel bathroom.

According to witnesses, the disagreement about who should clean the shared facility quickly spiralled out of control.

The victim, a third-year student, sustained fatal stab wounds and was rushed to PCA Kikuyu Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer Omondi Ogola from Kikuyu said detectives have opened investigations to establish the circumstances of the killing.

He added that the confrontation intensified after some of the victimโ€™s friends got involved, leading the suspect to arm himself before the fatal attack.

“We received a report from one of the security persons, officers from The University of Nairobi Kikuyu Campus, that there had been an incident where one student had stabbed another. The student was rushed to PCA Kikuyu Hospital, where, later on, we learn that the student had passed on.”

“We suspect that death was caused by a stab injury. So I am here to confirm that we took up this matter,” the police stated.

With the help of community members, police apprehended the suspect and recovered the weapon suspected to have been used in the attack.ย He is currently being held at Kikuyu Police Station as investigations continue.

“Police and DCI, and members of the community worked together. The investigations were carried out, and we were able to apprehend the suspect. The suspected murder weapon was secured, and today he has been arraigned in court.”

“We are seeking custodial orders so that we can further our investigation. We have yet to establish a motive for this attack. Once these investigations are complete, we will be recommending charges,” police added.

This marks the second murder in quick succession to have occurred within a learning institution. On Monday, September 1, Ministry of Education officials in Narok County shut down Narok Adventist Primary and Junior Secondary School indefinitely after a Grade Nine student was found murdered on the school grounds.

The 14-year-old was discovered dead in the dormitory over the weekend, with injuries andย signs of a violent struggle.

Bloodstains were found both at the scene and in a nearby washroom, though the circumstances leading to his death remain unclear. Police have since embarked on investigations.
