Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Kenya Network in partnership with other agroecological organizations on Friday September 5, 2025 hosted Green Action Week with calls towards making earth green through embracing agroecological practices.

The Green Action Week was held at Kenya Industrial Training Institute(KITI) in Nakuru under the Theme โ€˜Sharing Community Solutions.

Speakers who addressed during the event that included exhibition of best practices by by farmers, stressed the need to bring to an end the use of chemicals by embracing sustainable smart agriculture.

This, even as farmers were encouraged to ensure value addition in their farming.

Nakuru City Manager Gitau Thabanja who was chief Guest assured that there shall be spaces for Organic foods within Nakuru city markets.

He reiterated the need for research to understand where various types of foods can do better so that farmers cannot incur losses.

Thabanja also lauded some of the best practices by farmers for instance Waste segregation where organic waste can be used by farmers in their farms.

โ€œWaste segregation measures is the way to go and will help address the menace of waste management in the City,โ€ stated Thabanja.

He also encouraged the need for Cultural villages where organic foods can be accessed and also focus on marketing as well as empower organic farmers.

The City Manager at the same time called on the Ministry of education to ensure that agriculture as a subject focuses on organic food.

โ€œIn our schools, the Ministry of Education should also start focusing on organic farming through Agriculture subject and it be incorporated into the syllabus,โ€ he said.

Mr. John Kariuki from Slow Food Kenya who is also Vice Chair PELUM Kenya Network,ย  lauded farmers for the role played in shaping agriculture.

He reiterated the need for proper policies on agroecology, adding that already Nakuru County has one coming up.

โ€œThere is need for policies on agroecology and we are proud that Nakuru County Government has worked with us to ensure agroecology policy is in place and we shall launch it soon,โ€ he said.

He regretted that despite numerous conversations on organic foods, they are nowhere in the markets.

John called for need to have spaces within markets where organic foods can be accessed.

โ€œWe have talked severally about organic foods but there is no place to find them in the markets. We need to have these sections of pure organic foods in our markets,โ€ he stated,โ€ he said.

On her part Nakuru County Director of Agriculture Dr. Linet Echesa revealed that the county government is working on agroecology policy.

She noted that this is key towards finding solutions in various areas among them the pests control.

โ€œOur officers have been training our farmers on sustainable Agricultural practices. Organic farming should be embraced towards addressing the challenges in food production,โ€ she said.

In an exclusive interview with famousnakuru.co.ke, Ms Sarah Wambui from PELUM Kenya revealed that Green Action Week is an International campaign that takes place in more than 30 countries.

In Kenya, the campaign is spearhead by PELUM Kenya, with focus on knowledge sharing on sustainable Agricultural practices, conservation of natural resources as well as indigenous seeds, foods and culture.

According to Ms Wambui, PELUM Kenya is engaging the County Government of Nakuru on coming up with a policy on agroecology and the process is at advanced stage.

โ€œProbably we will be launching the Nakuru County Agroecology policy soon and this will help farmers in line with the policy,โ€ she stated.

The event also had representatives from Baraka Agricultural College and Farming Systems Kenya among others.
