Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy has praised the recent overseas moves of Ryan Ogam and Alphonce Omija, saying their success is a reflection of what local football can achieve when young talent is nurtured and exposed on the right platforms.
Speaking on Monday, McCarthy expressed pride in the duo, who impressed during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and have since landed lucrative contracts abroad.
ย โWeโve seen Ryan get a good move, and Alphonce is on his way to Tunisia. These are the stories we want. Football must change livesโitโs not just about playing for 90 minutes,โ said McCarthy.
Omija left the national team camp this week to finalize his move to Club Africain in Tunisia, while Ogam is reportedly sealing a deal with a European club.
McCarthy credited CHAN 2024 for providing the perfect shop window for locally based players and encouraged others to remain focused and hungry for success.
ย โI keep sayingโtalent alone isnโt enough. The players who work hard, stay disciplined, and perform when given a chance will always stand out. The opportunities are there.โ
The coach emphasized that such moves also reflect positively on the technical bench and the Kenyan football system at large, adding that it motivates the current squad to give their best.
ย โThese are the standards we want. When youโre in this team, itโs not just about resultsโitโs about growth, impact, and building careers.โ
With Kenya eyeing victory against Seychelles on Tuesday, McCarthy says the national teamโs growing professionalism and ambition should inspire players across the country.
