Kenya Met Lists Areas To Receive Rainfall This Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released its weekly forecast for September 9th to 15th, predicting continued rainfall in select regions while warning of soaring temperatures and gusty winds across others.

Rainfall is expected to continue in a few parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, a region that generally experiences cool and wet conditions during certain times of the year.

This region includes counties such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murangโ€™a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, and Laikipia (partially).

In the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, rainfall is also expected in several counties. These include Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Bungoma.

The Lake Victoria Basin is another area where rainfall is forecasted to persist. This includes counties such as Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Busia.

Some parts of the Rift Valley are also expected to receive rain. These include counties such as Nakuru, Baringo, Narok, Kajiado and Laikipia (partially).

Residents in coastal and northern counties should brace for high daytime temperatures, with Mandera, Lodwar, and Garissa forecast to hit highs of 37.0ยฐC, 36.0ยฐC, and 35.0ยฐC, respectively.

Nighttime temperatures are expected to dip below 10ยฐC in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region with Nyahururu projected to experience the lowest at 7.0ยฐC.

Strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (about 46 km/h) are expected over the Coast, South-eastern Lowlands, and both North-eastern and North-western Kenya.

Kenya Met has advised caution, particularly in Kenyaโ€™s territorial waters and surrounding lowland areas.

Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin & Rift Valley: Expect morning sunny intervals and scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Some areas may receive showers at night.

North-western Kenya (Turkana & Samburu): Generally sunny days and partly cloudy nights, with a chance of occasional showers at any time.

Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi, Nyeri, and Meru): Cloudy mornings with light rainfall, clearing to sunny intervals. Scattered showers may occur in the afternoons and evenings.

North-eastern Kenya: Sunny during the day with partly cloudy nights. Occasional light morning rains are possible.

South-eastern Lowlands: Cloudy mornings giving way to sunny spells; nights will remain partly cloudy.

Coast: Mostly sunny days with a possibility of morning and night showers in a few locations.

Between September 1st and 7th, rainfall was mainly concentrated in the western highlands and the Lake Victoria Basin.

According to Kenya Met, Bungoma County recorded the highest 7-day rainfall total of 91.2 mm at Kibisi Secondary School. The heaviest 24-hour rainfall, 59.2 mm, was logged at Eluuya Girlsโ€™ Secondary School on September 7th.

Mandera had the hottest day at 37.4ยฐC, while Nyahururu registered the coldest night at 7.2ยฐC.

The report noted a general increase in daytime temperatures across the country, while nighttime temperatures fluctuated, rising in places like Narok and Nakuru, and dipping in areas such as Kitui and Meru.

The Kenya Meteorological Department advises residents, especially in high-risk areas, to stay informed through official updates and remain prepared for localized weather changes throughout the week.
