The slain Nairobi advocate of high court Mathew Kyalo Mbobu was trailed throughout his route before being fatally shotย near Galleria Mall in Karen South, Nairobi on September 9, 2025.
This is according to detectives on Thursday, September 11, 2025. The assailants trailed him before striking him while behind the wheel just when he was close to his Karen home.
With the review of the CCTV footage, phone data, and putting into account the eyewitnesses, theย DCI officers have recounted the movements of the slain advocate on the fateful day.
Through Citizen Digital, detectives revealed that the surveillance from private buildings and public roads geographically mapped Mbobuโs movements from his office at Chester House to Sagret Hotel, where he arrived at 11:05 am on Tuesday where he held a three-hour meeting with several individuals who are now considered persons of interest.
Mbobu and his counterparts according to the receipts showed that they had lunch worth Sh3,800 before the lawyer left the hotel at 1:45 pm and returned to his office. He left his office at around 9 minutes past 5:00 pm.
He is seen heading to Wabera streets, City Hall Way, Parliament Road, Uhuru Highway, and Nyayo Roundabout.ย Further in the footage, he joined Langโata Road and later Magadi Road where the traffic is usuallyย slow.
The assassins who seemed to have been trailing him all through ambushed him near Boyani, close to his Karen home and killed him.
According to the eye witnesses, the gunmen who wore face masks and helmets pulled alongside, he thought that they wanted to snatch his mobile phone only for them to shoot him unexpectedly before breaking away aboard motorbikes through the Galleria Mall route.
With the family calling for an expedited probe and bringing the culprit to book, they have in devastationย described the loss of their kin through the acts of the most treacherous individuals.
They demonstrated Mbobu as a loving and caring man who shied away from controversial cases. James Maluki, (brother) also an advocate, informed that they are still rilling in shock and pain of losing him in such a manner and the reason behind.
At Mayiani Village in Makueni County, his elderly mother seemingly engulfed in grief and lost for words, Mbobuโs elderly mother emerged from her house.
With no strength to accommodate what had and was going on, she did not utter a word, perhapsย wondering the motive behind the gruesome murder of her third born son.
Devastated by the turn of events, Maluki urged the government to ensure this matter is investigated to its logical conclusion. โ This is because we need to enjoy our freedom of movement, and as professionals, we need to be allowed to do our work without fear of looking over our shoulders,โ he said.
Mbobu who had served as chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Resolution Tribunal was an active legal services provider and a lecturer at the University of Nairobi School of Law.
DCI in a statement, informed the public that theirย investigators are working diligently, employing all available resources and expertise to piece together the events surrounding this incident.
On the other hand, the Law Society of Kenya through theirย president Faith Odhiambo, condemned the killing, terming it as a big loss to the legal fraternity.
Odhiambo announced that advocates will on Friday, September 12, stage a nationwide Purple Ribbon March across the societyโs eight branches to honour Mbobu and demand security for lawyers.
She tells how advocates have been victimised and targeted for the work that they do. โOur security agencies have an immediate duty to act decisively in putting an end to this growing menace,โ
