According to Dr. Kiiru Chomba, a Kenyan scholar based in the US, the ongoing conflict between the Judiciary and the Executive will erode the trust that Kenyans have in the independent institutions established by the Constitution.
Chomba emphasizes the importance of leaders respecting the Constitution and following proper procedures to address issues. To regain the trust of Kenyans and both local and foreign investors, Chomba stresses the need for the three branches of government to work together peacefully and harmoniously. He expresses concern about the government’s repeated attacks on the Judiciary, which he believes puts the country’s democracy at risk.
Chomba directs his plea to President William Ruto, urging him to set a precedent by avoiding public disputes with Judiciary members and opting for constitutional means to resolve differences. Ruto has accused some judicial officials of conspiring with powerful factions to obstruct government-funded projects. Chomba also advises Ruto to refrain from making public statements that undermine the dignity of his position as the nation’s leader.
Chomba maintains that it posed a great risk for the President to openly share his views regarding the ceremonial weapon bestowed upon him at his inauguration. Emphasizing the importance of safeguarding our nation and its democratic principles, Chomba implores religious figures to intervene and offer guidance to the President concerning pressing matters affecting the nation’s trajectory. Additionally, Chomba urges the authorities to cease unjustly singling out young individuals from Central Kenya and erroneously labelling them as members of the prohibited Mungiki organization.
He emphasizes that it is unjust to exploit or mistreat these young individuals for political advantage. Chomba also points out that these same young individuals from the Mount Kenya region showed their support for President Ruto in the recent general election and should not be subjected to bias or discrimination by certain individuals within the Kenya Kwanza government. As a person who actively fought for democracy, Chomba urges the government to guarantee that all Kenyans can fully experience the rights bestowed and protected by the Constitution.
