The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has rolled out an online system that allows users to change the ownership of motor vehicles entirely online using the eCitizen platform.

With the new system, motorists are no longer required to fill out forms or go to NTSA centers multiple times. Sellers start the process by logging into their eCitizen account, selecting the vehicle, uploading the logbook, and submitting the buyerโ€™s details. The buyer then receives a prompt to approve or reject the transfer electronically.

According to NTSA, the upgrade has streamlined internal checks, allowing applications to be processed within minutes. Once approved, a new logbook is issued within three working days.

Buyers can collect the new logbook from their chosen NTSA centre by presenting the old logbook and their original identification documents. Each application now generates a reference number that will be used by both parties to monitor progress in real-time.

The system also produces a digital audit trail for every step, a security feature meant to increase accountability and stifleย fraud. If an application is rejected, the seller immediately receives an SMS explaining the reason.

NTSA clarified that applicants can correct and resubmit their applications without incurring additional charges.

NTSA urged motorists not to pay bribes, stressing that all dealings must be conducted through official digital channels. The Authority reminded the public that driving a vehicle under the previous ownerโ€™s name for more than 14 days without completing the transfer violates the Traffic Act.

Prospective buyers are encouraged to verify the correct owner by conducting a search on the NTSA portal before completing a purchase.

โ€œIf contacted by any person(s) or through an unofficial channel, advising that a transfer of ownership application can be fast-tracked or influenced in any way, please report the matter to the nearest NTSA office or the EACC for further action,โ€ NTSA stated.

The Authority said the shift to a fully online platform will not only simplify service delivery but also increase transparency, strengthen security, and ensure better compliance with road traffic laws.
