The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has withdrawn from three upcoming by-elections, opting instead to back candidates from allied opposition parties.
The decision was announced on Wednesday, September 10, by party leader Rigathi Gachagua following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Nairobi.
Giving reasons for the move, Gachagua said it reflects DCPโs commitment to strengthening opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The NEC resolved to support the Democratic Party (DP) in the Mbeere North Constituency by-election, noting the seat had previously belonged to DP.
DCP also pledged to back aย Wiper candidate in the Muumbuni Ward race and a DAP-K candidate in the Kabuchai/Chwele Ward by-election in Bungoma County.
โFor the sake of unity, we are making deliberate choices in areas previously held by our partners. This is not a sign of weakness but a commitment to the bigger picture,โ Gachagua said during a press conference after the meeting.
While stepping aside for its opposition allies in some contests,ย Gachagua stressed that the party will still field candidates nationwide and rally supporters under the DCP banner.
“For all other elective positions, DCP shall field candidates and mobilise fully to campaign, popularise, and seek votes under our party ticket. Even as we compete, we shall respect our opposition partners in those regions, mindful that democracy is the preserve of every Kenyan,” the statement added.
The National Executive Council (NEC) announced the creation of a fully equipped Electoral Secretariat at party headquarters to coordinate campaign strategy, messaging, logistics, branding, and fundraising.
It also strengthened two key internal organs โ the National Elections Board (NEB) and the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC) โ to oversee nominations and resolve disputes.
DCPโs exit from the Mbeere North by-election followed shortly after its candidate, Duncan Mbu,i quit the party to run as an independent. In a September 6 statement, Mbui accused DCP of bowing to pressure from other opposition allies.
Meanwhile, ahead of the November 27 by-elections, the IEBC has issued new guidelines. Campaigns will run daily from 7 am to 6 pm, starting October 8.ย
Independent aspirants must also present a clearance certificate from the Registrar of Political Parties confirming they have not been members of any political party for at least three months before election day.
