Homa Bay: Businessman and philanthropist Philip Aroko has officially parted ways with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and declared his intention to contest the upcoming Kasipul by-election as an independent candidate.

Aroko, previously a loyal ODM supporter, made the move following fears that the party would endorse his competitor, Boyd Were, son of the late MP Ong’ondo Were, to succeed his father.

The possible endorsement stirred debate within the constituency, with some residents questioning the fairness of the party’s decision.

In a passionate statement shared on his social media platforms, Aroko unveiled his campaign symbol—the Otete, a traditional shelter for chicks—which he described as a powerful metaphor for protection, care, and survival.

He pledged to shield the people of Kasipul from the ‘predators’ of poverty, insecurity, poor healthcare, and neglect.

Aroko emphasised his commitment to improving healthcare, enhancing security, and promoting social stability.

He called for a shift away from divisive politics and toward leadership grounded in service, development, and empowerment.

Over the years before the demise of Were, Aroko had earned grassroots support across Kasipul’s wards through various initiatives, including paying school fees, drilling boreholes, upgrading roads, and supporting local social groups without discrimination.

His independent bid sets the stage for a competitive race in the November 27 by-election, as voters weigh legacy politics against promises of inclusive and transformative leadership.
