A video of President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed during the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has warmed hearts.

A viral clip of the two shows the prime minister quietly walking up behind Ruto and playfully massaging his shoulders.
Ruto smiled in surprise, and then they both started laughing, which made the event feel less formal for a moment.

The president wore a patterned silk long-sleeve shirt, and he paired it with black trousers.
His look contrasted with Abiy’s, who was dressed formally.
This isn’t the first time they’ve displayed their bromance. During the Prime Minister’s trip to Kenya in 2024, photos showed the two shaking hands and hugging in the rain, showing a friendship that went beyond standard diplomatic niceties.

Ruto was the primary guest at the dam’s opening. He called it a “Pan-African statement” and promised that Kenya would help Ethiopia become energy self-sufficient.
He also said that Kenya was ready to sign a power purchase agreement with Addis Ababa to buy extra electricity from the project.
Ruto told Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed that the project was the right choice, despite Egypt and Sudan’s long-standing opposition.
Egypt gets 90% of its freshwater from the Nile, so both countries see GERD as a threat to their water security.

In 2024, Ruto received Abiy at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) amidst heavy rain.
A day later, during a meeting that Abiy attended, he strolled out in a Kaunda suit that looked similar to Ruto’s.
Ruto wore a light blue suit with the same style and notched lapels as Abiy’s khaki-toned suit, which could have been a coincidence.
The president is known for his love of the Kaunda suit, which is named after former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda.
