Boda-boda riders on Thursday attacked and set on fire a bus that had been involved in a fatal accident in Donholm, Nairobi.
According to the police, the bus had knocked down and killed a motorcyclist before the mob turned on it and set it alight.
The passengers and crew had already escaped from the bus by the time the police arrived.
They said they arrived at the scene to find the bus alight, with the perpetrators of the incident having escaped the scene.
According to witnesses, the rider sustained fatal injuries upon impact. Following the incident, passengers were forced to leave the bus and find alternative transport while the driver and conductor waited for the authorities to arrive.
However, moments later, more boda boda operators gathered at the scene and took matters into their own hands.
A witness took to social media to describe what happened, accusing the fire department and the authorities of a delayed response that made the situation worse.
โA boda-boda operator was killed by a bus, which shattered his skull. It took more than an hour for the police or any other rapid response team to arrive,โ he posted on X.
โThe other operators became angry and set fire to the city shuttle bus. Surprisingly, the firefighting team did not respond quickly either, only arriving once the busโs combustible components had been completely consumed.โ
The riderโs body was taken to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigations.
