The prime suspect linked to the killings at the Kenyatta National hospital ward has been arrested, the Directorate of Criminal investigations has revealed.

The suspect now identified as Kennedy Kalombotole, was arrested following the recent death of a patient; admitted at the Kenyatta ward on July 11.

The DCI in their revelations stated that โ€œKalombotoleโ€™s arrest follows the brutal murder of Edward Maingi Ndegwa on July 17, 2025. Ndegwa was a patient admitted in Ward 7B, Group C (Male), on July 11, 2025,โ€

Preliminary investigations indicate that Kennedy Kalombotole was admitted to the facility on December 1, 2024, and is the prime suspect in the murder of Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, 40, who was murdered in Ward 7C during the night of 6th and 7th February, 2025.

In the latest murder incident, investigations revealed that the ward nurse had checked the patient at 11:30 a.m. and taken his blood pressure. At 12:30 p.m., a relative visited and found him stable, leaving the ward at around 1:30 p.m.

However, at approximately 2:00 p.m., a cleaner going round cleaning the corridor noticed blood pooling around the patientโ€™s neck.

Upon visiting the scene, the homicide detectives noticed bloody slippers prints from the victimโ€™s bedside to a nearby toilet and eventually to a side room, where the suspect, Kalombotole, was admitted.

Detectives informed that they recovered a pair of blue slippers in the room and a blood-stained bedsheet. Also, on the ground, directly to the 7th floor where the window to the deceasedโ€™s ward is, they recovered a knife wrapped in gloves.

The recovered items were forwarded to the National Forensic Laboratory for detailed forensic analysis to augment the case.

Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) was handed the compiled filed for perusal and advise and upon reviewing the file, it directed the Investigating Officer to undertake further comprehensive inquiries to reinforce the prosecutionโ€™s case.

Previously, Kinyua was referred to KNH from St. Maryโ€™s Hospital, Langโ€™ata on December 11, 2024 and admitted for the management of patients with nervous system disorders; neurological conditions.

Mr Kinyua was found to have pressure and ulcers resulting from prolonged immobility. Comprehensive medical investigations resulted into diagnosis of a rare neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness rendering him dependent.

On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Mr Kinyuaโ€™s condition was observed to be stable, with normal routines being undertaken on him.

At around 9pm a nurse attended to Kinyua and another check up at 3 pm. He was stable.

In the wee hours on Friday, nurses doing normal routine check up were shocked to find his face covered in a blood-stained sheet. The nurses uncovered him and he was motionless with a cut wound on his neck.

The hospital security and the management were notified and later authorities were informed and took over the matter.

Kalombotole is currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment. The motive behind the murders is yet to be established.
