Three suspects arrested in connection with the murder of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu were freed for lack of evidence.

Their lawyer, Maulid Bare, confirmed they were released on Saturday, September 13.

Reports indicated that the trio were among the last people seen with Mbobu just hours before he was gunned down along Magadi Road last week.

Bare stated that investigators failed to obtain any forensic evidence, including mobile phone data, that could directly link his clients to the killing.

“The arrest and detention of the three was malicious, unjustified, and reckless abuse of police powers,” Bare stated.

“We wish to make it clear that the forensic phone analysis, the ballistic examination of the firearm, and the independently verified alibis have all conclusively exonerated the three from any connection whatsoever to the murder.”

Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu was killed in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, September 9, while driving home through the Galleria Brookside area along Magadi Road in Nairobi.

The veteran advocate, with over 30 years of experience, was shot dead shortly after 7:30 p.m. by a gunman on a motorcycle who fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, September 11, confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is pursuing additional suspects linked to the murder.

Murkomen added that several witnesses have already provided statements, and detectives are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the killing.

“We have been in touch with the DCI since this thing happened, and I am happy to note that there is some progress. Some persons of interest have been identified,” Murkomen revealed.

“Those persons of interest are being interrogated, and so many others are going to be sought. We thank the eyewitnesses who have already come out who were at the scene, and many others who are giving information to the DCI.”
