Kenya National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangโula says the African continent is ready for take off should Africans themselves take on the responsibility of steering it to greater heights.
Wetangโula who also doubles up as the Chairperson of the East African Community Bureau of Speakers was speaking in Munyonyo, Kampala Uganda as he presided over a meeting of the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the National Legislatures of EAC Member States to mark the 11th UNESCO African week and 9th Africa engineering conference.
Wetangโula said; โThrough this platform, we reaffirm our collective resolve to advance the principles of regional integration. We underscore our shared commitment to strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and legislative cooperation.โ
He emphasized that together, the eight nations of the East African Community shall continue to champion progressive laws, promote good governance, and drive inclusive development that reflects the aspirations of the Citizenry and ensuring that the region remains a beacon of unity, stability and prosperity.
โAfrica is the richest Continent in the Word but with the poorest people. Engineers can turn Africa resources into projects that can changes lives in Africa.โ
Uganda National Assembly Speaker Anita Among who read President Yoweri Museveniโs speech said no way can Africans can emancipate themselves from backwards without carrying out industrial revolution.
โThe Government of Uganda has prioritized infrastructural development in key areas of energy and transport in order to lower the cost of doing business,โ said President Museveni.
The Ugandan President said the high cost of energy, transport, inadequate money and labor pose a challenge in the growth of business.
โIn order to make profits in business we need to minimize costs. There has been a deliberate move to prioritize infrastructural development to have a strong economic base and attract investment in sectors of ICT, Agriculture, Commercial, Industries and Services.โ
Speaker Among said Engineers play a great role and she will continue to rally parliamentarians in Uganda to support the sector.
โAfrica stands to benefit to deliberate from the talks in the conference. President Museveni has been at the forefront championing Science, Technology and Innovation through legal framework. The Uganda Government has continued to promote Scientists.โ
East African Legislative Assembly Speaker Joseph Ntakirutimana said the conference was making Africa proud.
โLetโs have such forums rotational; have them in Kigali, Congo, South Sudan, Dar Salaam and Burundi. We need to have our young people together; they are our future and Engineering is the future of our East Africa Community.โ
During the conference, the organizers also announced that the EAC Sports will be held in Uganda December 5th to December 17th. The Joint Committee will be meeting beginning next month.
The East Africa Parliament Secretariat will be at the center of the planning and will ba appraising the committee on time. Participating teams are required to arrive on time and will be provided with training grounds.
The forum brings together the EAC Member States of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Federal Republic of Somalia.
