The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a warning to shut down 107 clubs, bars, lounges, and restaurants across the country after receiving multiple noise complaints.
In a notice released on Monday, September 22, NEMA gave the establishments seven days to present environmental compliance documents or risk closure.
The directive requires each of the 107 businesses to submit at least five documents, including an explanation of why they should not face legal action or be shut down.
“NEMA has been receiving public noise pollution complaints from the public regarding clubs/lounges, bars and restaurants across the country,” the notice read in part.
“Several facilities have been served with the Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents, but the majority have failed to comply.”
Among the documents required are a certificate of incorporation with a list of directors or owners (CR-12), an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licence, and the latest Environmental Audit (EA).
The businesses must also outline the noise control measures they have put in place.
The 107 targeted clubs are spread nationwide, though the majority are in Nairobi County, including previously closed hotspots like Habanos and Quiver.
In Kilimani alone, three establishments are on the list, while Ruiru, Uthiru, Ruaka, and Gateway Mall each have two. Others include a popular lounge on Mirema Drive, a chain bar along Kiambu Road, and another on Riverside Drive.
Beyond Nairobi, those flagged include a pub in Oyugis, a club in Kabarnet, and another on Mawego Road in Homa Bay.
The notice also mentions a famous crocodile farm in Mombasa, a backpacker hostel in Nyali, and at least one venue each in Meru, Kakamega, Webuye, and Nanyuki.
