Chaos erupted at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday, September 21, after police clashed with football fans ahead of a Kenya Premier League match.
The supporters, believed to be Gor Mahia fans, allegedly tried to force their way into the venue to watch their team face Bidco United in their season opener.
Footage obtained by Viral Tea showed groups of fans in green jerseys scaling the stadiumโs outer fence in broad daylight.
The fans eventually reached the stadiumโs main gate, where police officers tried to push them back using teargas.
The confrontation escalated into running battles, with parts of the venue clouded in smoke as dozens of supporters scattered while officers gave chase.
It is still unclear why the fans were barred from entry, though speculation points to many trying to access the match without tickets. Regular tickets were priced at Ksh300, while VIP seats went for Ksh1,000.
Gor Mahiaโs fan base is known for its unmatched passion, but their zeal has, at times, boiled over into chaos. In June, police were forced to fire teargas at rowdy supporters during a clash at Ulinzi Sports Complex after Nairobi Unitedโs shock 2-1 win over Gor in the Mozzart Bet Cup final.
A month earlier, several fans were injured in a stampede at Gusii Stadium ahead of Gor Mahiaโs highly anticipated KPL tie against Shabana FC.
On Sunday, part of the frenzy was fueled by fans eager to gauge the teamโs readiness for the new season after losing the league title to Police FC in the 2024/25 campaign.
ย On April 21, 2024, chaos by the fan bases of Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards marred the aftermath of the Mashemeji Derby at the Nyayo Stadium, forcing police to intervene by lobbing teargas.
On March 25, 2025, ahead of the Mashemeji Derby,ย CAF Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) LOC chairman, Nicholas Musonye, warned that if any match led to acts of vandalism, such as damaged seats or stone-throwing, both teamsย would be banned from playing at Nyayo Stadiumย in the future.
