The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has given a seven-day ultimatum for the removal and disposal of a grounded barge off the Nyali coast in Mombasa.

In a public notice dated August 11, 2025, KMA Director General Omae Nyarandi said the vessel, identified as COMARCO 3652, poses significant risks to the marine environment and navigation safety.

“In line with Section 323 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 2009, the barge is hereby declared abandoned,” the notice reads.

Nyarandi added that the authority intends to remove and dispose of the vessel under powers granted by Section 322(1)(c) of the Act.

Anyone with an interest in the barge has seven days from the date of the notice to submit their claim with supporting documents to the Director General.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has warned cargo owners and shipping lines to remove long-stay containers and condemned cargo from the Port of Mombasa by August 14 or risk having them destroyed at their own cost.

KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto said a recent yard audit revealed numerous uncollected containers and goods recommended for destruction, which have been occupying valuable space and causing congestion.

“The Authority has been undertaking a port clean-up exercise to free yard areas and maximise the use of all available spaces to enhance safe and efficient operations,” Capt. Ruto said.

The directive applies to containers deemed abandoned or unfit for use, as well as cargo condemned under port regulations. Shipping lines have been told to either move the containers from the port or arrange for their destruction.

KPA said the move is also aimed at maintaining safety and environmental standards, as abandoned goods can pose hazards if left unattended. A list of containers marked for removal has been made public to help affected parties take immediate action.
