Tyler Onyango (L) challenges Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo.

Everton midfielder Tyler Onyango is wanted by Benni McCarthy for Harambee Stars.

Everton midfielder Tyler Onyango has opened up on his desire to represent Kenya, with veteran British journalist Alan Myers highlighting three qualities the youngster would bring to Benni McCarthy’s Harambee Stars.

Onyango, 22, who is on loan at Stockport County, qualifies for Kenya through his father and has already represented England at youth level.

Speaking on Citizen TV’s Sporty Monday, veteran journalist Alan Myers, who has tracked Onyango’s career from his Everton youth days, emphasised the qualities that could make him a valuable addition to Kenya’s national team.

“I’ve seen Tyler play since he was eight — he has incredible vision, control, and work ethic,” Myers said.

Onyango himself underlined his affection for African football and his ambition to feature for the Harambee Stars on a separate interview on The Added Time Podcast.

“I love African football. There are so many great African players in the Premier League, and I want to be one of them — playing for Kenya, making a name, and making the fans proud,” Onyango said.

He also praised Kenyan supporters: “Kenyans are amazing supporters of their national teams. I would love to be part of that journey and give them joy through football.”

The midfielder, who came through Everton’s academy and has also featured for their senior squad, added his admiration for the Harambee Stars coach: “Benni is a coach I admire. His experience is top-level, and it would be a dream to play under someone like him.”

With Kenya currently in a rebuilding phase under McCarthy, Onyango’s ability to operate in midfield, central defence, or even at right-back could provide depth and versatility.

Born in Luton in March 2003, Onyango joined Everton’s academy at the age of eight and steadily rose through the youth ranks, making his senior debut for the Toffees in an FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday in January 2021.

He has also gained experience in the English Football League, spending loan spells with Burton Albion and now Stockport County to sharpen his game with regular first-team minutes. Standing at 1.91m, his athleticism, versatility, and technical ability have made him one of the more highly regarded talents to emerge from Everton’s academy in recent years.
