As the sun blazes across the country and heatwaves suppress any appetite for heavy meals, one drink quietly conquers tables across Nairobi and Eastleigh: the mango lassi.
This refreshing yoghurt-based beverage is not just a thirst quencher; it is a cooling, nutritious staple with cultural significance that dates back centuries.
Why lassi? Lassi, in its simplest form, is a yoghurt-based drink blended with water or milk. For generations, it has been prized for:
Cooling properties: Yoghurt soothes the digestive system and helps counter the heat.
Nutrition: Packed with probiotics, calcium, and protein, lassi supports gut health and hydration.
Versatility: Sweetened with fruit or spiced with herbs, the drink adapts to every taste.
Cultural roots: From the Somali sweet lassi to Indian fruit-infused variations, it remains a symbol of hospitality and comfort.
When mangoes, known as the โking of fruitsโ, meet creamy lassi, the result is the world-famous mango lassi, a perfect balance of sweetness, tang, and indulgence.
