As the sun blazes across the country and heatwaves suppress any appetite for heavy meals, one drink quietly conquers tables across Nairobi and Eastleigh: the mango lassi.

This refreshing yoghurt-based beverage is not just a thirst quencher; it is a cooling, nutritious staple with cultural significance that dates back centuries.

Why lassi? Lassi, in its simplest form, is a yoghurt-based drink blended with water or milk. For generations, it has been prized for:

Cooling properties: Yoghurt soothes the digestive system and helps counter the heat.

Nutrition: Packed with probiotics, calcium, and protein, lassi supports gut health and hydration.

Versatility: Sweetened with fruit or spiced with herbs, the drink adapts to every taste.

Cultural roots: From the Somali sweet lassi to Indian fruit-infused variations, it remains a symbol of hospitality and comfort.

When mangoes, known as the โ€œking of fruitsโ€, meet creamy lassi, the result is the world-famous mango lassi, a perfect balance of sweetness, tang, and indulgence.

Ingredients:

2 ripe mangoes (peeled and cubed, or 1 cup mango pulp)

1 cup plain yoghurt (chilled)

ยฝ cup cold milk or water (adjust for thickness)

2-3 tablespoons sugar or honey (to taste)

ยผ teaspoon cardamom powder (optional)

Ice cubes (optional, for extra chill)

Steps to follow:

Step 1

Peel and cube ripe mangoes, ensuring they are sweet and free of fibres. Frozen mango chunks or canned pulp can also be used.

Step 2

In a blender, combine mango pieces, chilled yoghurt, milk (or water), and sugar/honey. Blend until smooth and creamy.

Step 3

Stir in cardamom for fragrance or add one of the suggested โ€œtwistsโ€ below.

Other twists you can try

Mint and lime lassi: Add 6-7 mint leaves and a squeeze of lime.

Spiced golden lassi: Add ยผ tsp turmeric and a pinch of black pepper.

Coconut lassi: Replace half the yoghurt with coconut milk.

Chilli-mango lassi: Add a tiny pinch of chilli powder for a kick.

Pour into tall glasses, garnish with chopped mint leaves, serve immediately while cold, and enjoy with friends and family!
