Comedian Eric Omondi has weighed in on the challenges facing young couples, stating that one of the reasons marriages are failing is the shift in traditional gender roles due to women’s empowerment.

Speaking to YouTubers on Monday, September 22, 2025, Omondi noted a stark contrast between older generations and today. He said that his grandparents’ and even his parents’ marriages seemed stable, but today, he sees breakups happening on a daily and weekly basis. He added that he struggles to find a single happy, lasting marriage among his own friends and family.

“Marriage has become hard, bro,” he said. “People are breaking up on a daily and weekly basis. You do not know how sad it is. I will not mention names, and this includes my friends and family.

Omondi attributes a significant part of this trend to the evolving dynamics between men and women. He explained that in the past, men were seen as the unquestioned head of the household. Now, however, women are achieving financial independence, earning more than men, and taking a stronger leadership role in relationships.

While Omondi acknowledged that this empowerment of women is a positive step toward equality, he believes it has created friction in marriages. He suggested that some men are struggling to adjust to a new reality where they must share authority.

“In Africa, we used to believe that the man is the head of the house, but now women are earning money and surpassing men,” Omondi said. “I think this is a good thing. Women have been empowered, the girl child has been empowered, and equality has been promoted… this is positive.”

Eric Omondi’s sentiments come just a few months after his public break-up with baby mama Lynne Njihia. The two decided to part ways but their main reason for separation has been under wraps. What’s your take on Eric Omondi’s opinion on marriage nowadays?
