Pitso Mosimane in Tug-of-War as African Powerhouses Circle

South African coach Pitso Mosimane is courted by African giants, with Kaizer Chiefs and another top club battling for his services.

Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca are weighing up a bold managerial move after reports suggested South African coach Pitso Mosimane has emerged as a frontrunner to replace under-pressure Amine Benhachem.

According to Moroccan publication Telexpresse, โ€œMosimane has been considered due to his current availability,โ€ with the club eager to steady the ship after a modest start to the 2025/26 Botola Pro campaign.

Despite remaining unbeaten in their first two matches, a narrow victory over KACM Marrakech and a draw against El-Mansour , Benhachem is already feeling the heat from Wydadโ€™s demanding hierarchy and fanbase.

The 61-year-old Mosimane has been without a job since leaving Iranian outfit Esteghlal in January, but his reputation remains untarnished.ย

Widely regarded as one of Africaโ€™s greatest modern coaches, the former Bafana Bafana boss has won three CAF Champions League titles and carved out a reputation as a serial winner across the continent.

Mosimaneโ€™s rรฉsumรฉ is particularly appealing to Wydad, who remain desperate to reclaim their place at the summit of African football.

ย He is no stranger to the region, having famously guided Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly to back-to-back continental crowns in 2020 and 2021, before embarking on stints in Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli, Al-Wehda and Abha Club.

A source close to Wydad revealed that the clubโ€™s leadership view Mosimane as a โ€œsafe pair of handsโ€ capable of restoring stability in Casablanca after a turbulent few months that saw Rulani Mokwena depart and Benhachem thrust into the hot seat.

For Wydad, the appeal lies in Mosimaneโ€™s proven track record in North Africa, his tactical acumen, and his ability to deliver results under immense pressure.

ย Bringing him to Casablanca would not only strengthen the squadโ€™s continental ambitions but also send a clear signal of intent to their domestic rivals.

While Wydad may be pushing hard to bring him to Morocco, they are not alone in their pursuit. South African giants Kaizer Chiefs are also in the market for a new coach following the dismissal of Tunisian Nasreddine Nabi last week, and Mosimane is firmly on their radar.

Interestingly, Mosimane himself has admitted in the past that Chiefs hold a special place in his heart.ย

โ€œI grew up supporting Kaizer Chiefs by the way. People don’t know that,โ€ he revealed back in 2020 during his tenure at Mamelodi Sundowns.

That childhood connection, combined with Chiefsโ€™ desperate need to revive their fading dominance, makes the Soweto side a serious contender for his services. For many Amakhosi fans, the prospect of Mosimane returning home to lead the club could represent a turning point in their quest to rediscover glory.

Appointing Mosimane would be more than just filling a vacancy; it would symbolize ambition and a willingness to invest in elite coaching.ย

His arrival at Naturena could potentially unlock the winning mentality that has eluded the Glamour Boys in recent years.
