Several students sustained injuries after a bus carrying students and teachers from St. Augustine Mumbuni Day Secondary School in Mwala Sub-County, who were coming from a school trip, was involved in a road accident.

The accident on Friday, September 26, occurred near Mutwamwaki Ridge along the Kivandiniโ€“Masinga Road in Machakos County.

According to initial reports, the bus was ferrying 48 Physics students and 3 teachers back from an academic excursion to the Masinga Hydro-Power Generation Dam when the accident occurred near the Musingini area.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are still under investigation, but sources at the scene indicate the vehicle may have lost control along a bend near the ridge.

Photos seen by The Kenya Times show the yellow Bishop Ndingi Secondary School bus, which was used to transport the students, overturned inside the ridge at the side of the road.

The images reveal shattered windows, including the front windscreen, and debris scattered around the crash site. Other photos captured first responders attending to the injured and coordinating rescue efforts amid the wreckage.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, and the injured were quickly taken to Matuu Level 4 Hospital for treatment.

The extent of the injuries has not been fully disclosed, but several students are reported to have sustained serious injuries.

Former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Member of Parliament aspirant Annastacia Muthini is among the politicians who wished the injured students a quick recovery.

โ€œI extend my heartfelt prayers to the Physics students of St. Augustine Mumbuni Secondary School who were involved in a road accident at Musingini, Masinga while returning from their academic trip to the Masinga Hydro-Power Generation Dam. I wish them a quick and full recovery,โ€ she said.

Police and education officials were yet to issue a statement by the time of publishing as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.

The crash comes after 25 people died last month following a tragic crash involving a school bus that was ferrying mourners when it overturned at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu โ€“ Kakamega Road.ย

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina, while confirming the incident, said that the bus belonging to AIC Naki High School was travelling from Kakamega towards Kisumu when the accident occurred on August 8 at around 5 p.m.

Maina mentioned that the driver might have lost control before plunging into a ditch.

โ€œThe driver appears to have lost control of the vehicle as it approached the Coptic Roundabout, crossed over to the opposite lane heading back to Kakamega, and plunged into a ditch,โ€ said Maina.

Among the deceased are 10 women, 10 men, and a 10-year-old girl.

Five other people were critically injured, with 15 sustaining minor cuts, including a minor with 8 months.ย

The injured were taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) in Kisumu for treatment.
