Thirteen people have died on the spot in a road accident on Sunday afternoon near Kikopey, Gilgil, along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

According to Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru, they were in a fourteen-passenger vehicle headed to Nakuru when it collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck.

โ€œThe matatu was overtaking and then it rammed into the trailer causing 13 fatalities and three others seriously injured,โ€ he said.ย 

โ€œFatalities have been rushed to Gilgil Sub-county mortuary and the seriously injured have been rushed to Gilgil hospital.โ€

Among those injured are two children.

According to reports, they had hired the matatu from Nairobi to head for a family function.

A probe has been launched to establish more details on the deadly accident.

The accident caused a traffic snarlup with the police at the scene taking charge of the situation.

This would be the second accident on the same highway hours apart.

Another crash involving a St Maryโ€™s Ambulance was reported on Saturday evening, September 27, near Kimende, Kiambu County.

The ambulance had 6 people no board, including a driver, a nurse, a patient, her husband, and two relatives, when the incident occurred.

Photos of the accident seen by Nairobileo.co.ke showed the ambulance completely damaged on the front end.

The accident happened a month after another string of carnage that claimed at least 50 lives within 72 hours.

The ill-fated string started on August 7 when a bus ferrying Kenya Pipeline workers was crashed by a cargo train.

Nine people perished on the spot.
