With poverty levels in Kakamega County reportedly choking the region, gubernatorial aspirant Dr Sylvester Anami has unveiled a grassroots empowerment initiative aimed at lifting residents through dairy goat farming.

Dr Anami, who is among the contenders eyeing the governor’s seat currently held by FCPA Fernandes Barasa, is banking on agriculture—specifically goat farming—as a practical and sustainable means of improving livelihoods, especially for the unemployed.

The initiative will involve the distribution of goats—a male and a female—to beneficiaries, allowing them to begin small-scale dairy goat farming operations.

The programme is specifically targeted at the unemployed and economically vulnerable residents, with the broader goal of enhancing household income and creating a pathway to self-reliance.

In addition to providing livestock, the programme includes a capacity-building component to help new farmers manage their goats effectively.

According to Dr Anami, this will involve training in goat farming techniques and support to access high-quality animal feed, ensuring that farmers are equipped to achieve optimal productivity.

Goat farming, he notes, offers a range of advantages for small-scale farmers.

These include minimal feed requirements, fast growth rates, efficient use of limited space, suitability for both meat and milk production, and low maintenance and high yield.

Others include availability of diverse and resilient breeds, a ready and consistent market demand, adaptability to a variety of environmental conditions, and quick returns that can offer immediate income for participating households.

Dr Anami’s vision for the programme is grounded in a broader social and economic transformation agenda.

He intends for the initiative to serve not only as a poverty-alleviation tool but also as a strategy to address youth unemployment, bridge economic inequality, and reduce overreliance on political handouts.

While still in its early stages, the project signals a campaign approach focused on economic empowerment and practical solutions.

It also presents a contrast to more conventional campaign promises, offering a clear, actionable plan aimed at tackling one of Kakamega’s most persistent challenges—poverty.

As political momentum builds ahead of the 2027 general elections, Anami’s goat farming initiative adds a new layer of policy debate in the county, foregrounding agriculture and livelihoods as central themes in the race for Kakamega’s top seat.
