Collins Kweyu, a Standard Group photojournalist, says his life is in danger after receiving threatening messages via WhatsApp in connection with a case involving a Migori-based judge.
According to the journalist, a person claiming to be an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sent him a message warning him to leave the judge alone, saying he had โtouched a live wire.โ
The anonymous individual, who later identified himself as a fellow journalist, went on to tell Kweyu to prepare for the end of the world later that day.
โDunia inaisha leo,โ the individual wrote.
When asked to explain, the person replied: โMessage home.โ
Kweyu says that when he woke up the following day, the same individual sent more texts mocking him for being a coward and downplaying the previous threats as a joke.
โBro, kumbe unakuwanga muoga hivi?โ The individual then claimed he meant no harm and reiterated that he was actually a fellow journalist.
Fearing for his safety, Kweyu reported the matter to Central Police Station in Nairobi on Monday, where a formal statement was recorded.
The suspect has reportedly been summoned to appear before the police today to record his own statement.
On September 19, Kweyu was arrested in Nairobi following a complaint lodged against him by a Migori judge. He was detained at Central Police Station and released the following day on a free bond.
