President Uhuru Kenyatta has reacted to the calls by the opposition and a section of members of clergy to amend the constitution and re-introduce the office of the Prime Minister and other posts.

Speaking on Thursday in Kirinyaga County, where he launched the Sh19 billion Thiba Dam project, the head of state described the debate as misplaced, saying it was inappropriate to change the Constitution only seven years after it was endorsed by a popular majority.

“Why are we talking about changing the constitution, only the other day we got this constitution and now you want to change it?,” The President wondered.

Uhuru further said it was time to now put politics aside and work together to develop the country and invited the opposition to work with him.

“We cannot continue with politics endlessly, we cannot feed on politics. Wananchi have made their choice and now it’s time to join hands and develop our great nation,” said the President.

He added: “We cannot achieve development with divisive politics every day, I always tell people, five years is not too long, just let me develop the country in the next four years and on the fifth year you can start your politics and face William Ruto.”

The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), members of the opposition and Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua are among political players who have called for creation of the Prime Minister position and other posts to ensure inclusivity in the leadership of the country.
