President William Ruto has called out the houses of parliament over alleged extortion against officials of the county and national governments.

He observed that the members of the departmental committees in the National Assembly and Senate had turned their oversight work into cash cows.

Speaking during the official opening of the Devolution Conference 2025 in Homa Bay, the president asked Senate speaker Amason Kingi, who was among the high-level event’s attendees, to sanction action against such a scheme that was ingraining itself in the committees.

According to the president, members of the committees go behind the scenes to demand kickbacks to sit on oversight reports or write favourable reports.

Ruto called for action to end the culture of corruption in the bicameral houses of parliament.

He petitioned the Senate speaker to lead the measures toward that cause.

Ruto noted that corruption was nullifying the efforts for good governance.

He urged the speakers of the two houses to seal the loopholes leveraged by rogue lawmakers who seek to benefit from the shortcomings of government bureaucrats instead of holding them to account.

At the same time, the president took a swipe at the Judiciary for being lenient to those implicated in cases of corruption.

He noted that criminals were taking advantage of the many chances of a fair hearing offered by the judicial system.
