Kericho County was rocked by tension and violence on Friday, August 15, as Governor Erick Mutai faced his second impeachment hearing since taking office, over allegations of misappropriating Ksh85 million in public funds.
Proceedings at the County Assembly began under heavy security after an attempted arson attack on the assembly building in the early hours of the morning.
Speaker Patrick Mutai told Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) that unidentified assailants stormed the premises around 4 a.m., managing to burn minor sections before security officers contained the fire.
The incident has been reported to the National Police Service, with investigations underway.
Security in Kericho town was visibly heightened, with dozens of armed police officers manning entry points and patrolling surrounding streets.
As the hearing progressed, running battles broke out between police and residents attempting to force their way into the assembly. Footage from the scene showed officers firing tear gas to disperse the crowds.
The impeachment motion, backed by a section of MCAs, accuses Governor Mutai of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and irregular procurement practices. Mutai has dismissed the charges as politically motivated.
This marks the second time the county boss has faced an ouster attempt. In 2024, 31 MCAs voted to impeach him, but the Senate saved him after 34 senators voted against proceeding with the case, compared to 10 in favor.
If successful at both the County Assembly and Senate stages, Mutai would join a short list of impeached governors, including Mike Mbuvi Sonko, Ferdinand Waititu, and Kawira Mwangaza.
The high-stakes hearing continues under a cloud of political tension, public unrest, and tight police control, as Kericho waits to learn the fate of its embattled governor.
