Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kenya Police Service, Eliud Lagat, conducted unannounced inspections at Mwingi Police Station in Kitui County and Matuu Police Station in Machakos County on Thursday, August 14, 2025. The visits are part of the DIGโs ongoing initiative to enhance operational efficiency, officer welfare, and service delivery at the grassroots level.
During the visits, DIG Lagat toured key departments, including the Report Office, Children and Gender Office, Cells, Anti-Crime Unit, Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Offices, Traffic Office, and Police Lines. He engaged directly with officers, commending their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to public service.
In his address, DIG Lagat emphasized mental health awareness, officer welfare, integrity, discipline, teamwork, and humane policing, urging officers to serve as role models and positively impact their communities.
The inspections come amid heightened scrutiny of police operations following the June 7, 2025, death of teacher and social media influencer Albert Ojwang in police custody at Nairobiโs Central Police Station. DIG Lagat had temporarily stepped aside during investigations but resumed duties on July 14, 2025, after being cleared of direct involvement by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
The DIG was accompanied by senior police officers from Kitui and Machakos Counties and his Personal Assistant, ASP Patrick Kithure. The surprise visits highlight a renewed focus on accountability, efficiency, and the welfare of police officers, reinforcing efforts to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
