President William Ruto has called on Kenyans to maintain discipline as Harambee Stars face Zambia in a high-stakes African Nations Championship (CHAN) fixture at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, August 17.
Speaking at State House Nairobi on Friday while addressing leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties, President Ruto lauded the national team for its spirited performance in the tournament but emphasized the need for responsible fan behavior.
โFans and the people of Kenya, you have done a tremendous job cheering Harambee Stars, but we must do so within the parameters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF),โ he said.
His appeal comes in the wake of chaotic scenes during Kenyaโs clash with Morocco, where security was breached, prompting CAF to impose a Ksh.12 million fine on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
The government has since heightened security measures for the Zambia tie, with fans without tickets advised to watch the game from public viewing arenas set up by the Nairobi County government.
Meanwhile, motorists have been urged to avoid Thika Road during the match due to anticipated congestion. In a traffic advisory, Nairobi Traffic Commander Joseph Chirchir announced road closures and diversions, including sections of Aerodrome, Langโata, and Mombasa Roads.
Alternative routes have been provided for motorists from Kiambu, Ruiru, Juja, and Githurai, with special arrangements for those heading to Kasarani.
The traffic plan forms part of wider logistical preparations to ensure the successful hosting of CHAN 2024, which is expected to draw thousands of fans and dignitaries.
