Murang’a Seal player Victor Haki has bowed to public pressure and issued an apology after a video of him mocking Harambee Stars’ painful exit from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) went viral, sparking nationwide outrage.

On Friday, August 22, Harambee Stars were eliminated in heartbreaking fashion, losing 4-3 on penalties to Madagascar. The East African underdogs continued their fairytale run, but for Kenyans, the loss was devastating as the nation had rallied behind the team throughout the tournament.

However, even before the pain of elimination settled, a video emerged online showing Haki appearing to celebrate Harambee Stars’ defeat. The footage quickly circulated on social media, with many fans branding the player’s actions as disrespectful and unpatriotic.

The reaction was swift and unforgiving. Kenyans, who had passionately supported the team’s CHAN campaign, condemned Haki’s conduct and demanded accountability. Many fans called for disciplinary action against the Murang’a Seal forward, arguing that mocking the national team undermined the spirit of unity and patriotism that football represents.

Faced with mounting criticism, Haki released a statement on Sunday acknowledging his mistake and asking for forgiveness.

“I want to sincerely apologise for the video I shared after Harambee Stars’ loss to Madagascar,” he said.

He continued, “I realise it came across as insensitive and disappointing, especially when the entire nation was hurting. It was unpatriotic, in bad taste, and not a true reflection of the respect I have for Harambee Stars, the players, the coaches, and the millions of fans who proudly stand behind our team.”

Although he has since deleted the video, Haki noted that the backlash served as an important lesson for him going forward.

“I have since taken down the video and take full responsibility for my mistake. This experience has been a lesson for me, and I promise to do better and be better in representing my country moving forward. Please accept my sincere apology.” He concluded.
