Business owners along Kimathi Street in Nairobi’s central business district are counting their losses after a group of armed men reportedly broke into several shops and stole merchandise on Sunday, August 24.
Witnesses said the group, some wearing masks, was first seen outside Nanak House, opposite the Stanley Hotel, armed with knives and chanting “wantam,” a slogan aimed at President William Ruto.
Armed with knives, the attackers reportedly threatened to stab shopkeepers before forcefully taking whatever they could in a chaotic rampage.
“One of them came inside, strangled me, and threatened me with a knife. They then locked the door, brought in sacks, and took everything,” recounted one trader.
After the shocking attack, the scene was heartbreaking. Broken windows and overturned furniture were scattered everywhere – a clear sign of the fear and destruction the attackers left behind.
Traders say such incidents have been increasing in the area, but despite reporting them to the authorities, no effective action has been taken.
This attack comes just a month after a similar incident in Mukuru kwa Reuben, where armed men raided private businesses and stole goods worth around Sh4.8 million, including electronics.
That July 20 attack left at least ten people and over 46 employees without jobs.
Witnesses said the attackers arrived shortly after the shops opened and injured anyone who tried to resist. In response, security teams have launched investigations to identify those responsible.
