Harambee Stars defender Joseph Stanley Okumu has been dealt a huge setback after sustaining a serious knee injury while turning out for his French side, Stade de Reims, in the opening match of the 2025/26 Ligue 2 season.

Okumu, 28, limped off in the 18th minute of the clash against Amiens on August 11 after a heavy collision with an opponent. The incident came just moments after Reims had conceded their opening goal.

Medical scans later confirmed significant ligament damage to his left knee, ruling the centre-back out of competitive action for several months.

In a statement released on August 14, Stadeย deย Reims confirmed the extent of the injury but stopped short of specifying the exact recovery timeline.

โ€œInitial examinations have confirmed severe ligament damage. Further tests will be conducted to determine the best course of treatment, but unfortunately, Joseph will be sidelined for several months,โ€ the club announced.

The French side also pledged full support to the Kenyan defender during his rehabilitation process. โ€œThe whole team is behind Jo. He will receive complete support from the club throughout his recovery. Stay strong, Joโ€”we are with you,โ€ read the statement.

The injury comes as a major blow for both club and country. For Kenya, it means Harambee Stars will be without their influential defender during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September against Gambia and Seychelles.

Okumu has been a key figure in Kenyaโ€™s backline, combining leadership with composure since his debut in 2016.

Okumu, who joined Stadeย deย Reims in July 2023 from Belgian outfit KAA Gent, quickly established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in Ligue 1 before the clubโ€™s relegation.

His commanding presence, aerial dominance, and ball-playing ability have made him a standout figure in both European football and the Harambee Stars setup.

For now, focus shifts to his road to recovery. While Reims and Harambee Stars fans will miss his services on the pitch, many are hopeful the towering defender will return stronger in the months ahead.
