Harambee Stars captain Abud Omar has expressed his fears that Kenya could find it hard to host major tournaments in future over one key issue.
Harambee Stars captain Abud Omar has warned of the risks that could befall Kenya in future if the country’s fans do not put their act together.
Omar is among those who have been issuing a rallying call to fans to behave well after security breaches that have been witnessed during Harambee Stars’ three matches at the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024).
Kenya has already received fines amounting to close to Ksh13 million from tournament organisers CAF over the bad behaviour of fans with their last match against Morocco witnessing an overflow of supporters into Kasarani Stadium.

As Harambee Stars prepare for a decisive final Group A match against Zambia’s Chipolopolo, here are a few things fans should note, including where to watch.
CAF has reacted by reducing the number of supporters in Kasarani Stadium for Kenya’s match against Zambia on Sunday by half and warned that Harambee Stars could play their home matches away if the situation does not change.
This has left Omar worried that Kenya might end up missing a chance to host future international tournaments over this kind of behaviour, issuing a rallying call to supporters to act right.
“Our dear Kenyan fans, your passion inspires us every day. Let’s remember that how we support also shapes our future as hosts,” Omar posted on social media.
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has received plaudits from his Angola counterpart Pedro Goncalves for navigating Kenya past a tough CHAN 2024 group.
“Storming gates can hurt our chances of bringing such tournaments back home. Football is about unity, respect, and bringing nations together—so if you don’t have a ticket, please celebrate with us from home and keep the spirit of the game alive.”
Kenya is under scrutiny in their subsequent games at CHAN 2024 and with the country set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania, the behaviour of home supporters could impact how the country is treated or the number and calibre of matches it will get to host.
Harambee Stars have already secured their quarter-final ticket at CHAN 2024 but will need to beat Zambia to top Group A and avoid a meeting with Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.
