Professional career

After completing her secondary education in 1979, she spent several years working within her local community in Machakos County, where she was actively involved in farming and religious work.

Her strong faith and leadership qualities eventually led her to become a preacher and gospel minister, a role she held for many years.

From 2010 to 2017, she hosted a religious program on Biblia Husema Broadcasting Studios, where she preached and offered spiritual guidance to thousands of listeners across the country.

In 2018, Kavindu was appointed Director of the Tanathi Water Service Board, a position she held until 2021.

During this period, she was responsible for overseeing water resource management and service delivery in various counties within the region.

Alongside her role at Tanathi, she was also appointed as a member of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Taskforce from 2018 to 2020.

In this capacity, she contributed to the national dialogue and reform agenda, participating in the development of proposals aimed at enhancing national unity, governance, and devolution.

Political career

Agnes Muthama Kavinduโ€™s political journey began with her first attempt to run for elective office in the 2017 general election, where she contested the Machakos County Woman Representative seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Despite running a spirited campaign, she did not secure the seat.

Running on a Wiper Democratic Movementโ€“Kenya ticket, Kavindu emerged as a strong candidate and campaigned on a platform of service delivery, good governance, and womenโ€™s empowerment.

In the March 18, 2021, by-election, she won decisively with 104,352 votes, defeating her closest rival from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who garnered 19,726 votes.

Kavindu was sworn in as the Senator for Machakos County, becoming the fourth woman elected to the Senate since its establishment.

As senator, she quickly became active in legislative work, representing Machakos County in various Senate committees, including the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee, where she scrutinizes the management of county resources, and the Senate Business Committee, which plans and coordinates parliamentary business.

In the 2022 general election, Kavindu successfully defended her seat, once again under the Wiper Democratic Movement banner, cementing her position as a key political figure in Machakos and the wider Eastern region.

She has since been actively involved in Senate business, serving on critical committees such as the County Public Investments and Special Funds Committee, where she plays an oversight role in auditing county expenditures, and the Senate Business Committee, which coordinates legislative agendas.
