Global music star Akon is reportedly facing the end of his decades-long marriage after his wife Tomeka Thaim filed for divorce just days before what would have been their 29th wedding anniversary.

According to court filings that Billboard was able to obtain, the split was caused by “irreconcilable differences.”

Despite Akon’s well-known career in music and business, the couple, who were married in 1996, have kept a lot of their relationship private.

The two share one child, and Tomeka requested joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter, Journey.

Besides requesting visitation rights for Akon, Tomeka is requesting physical custody, or the child’s primary residence, with her.

In her petition, she also asks the court to forbid her from providing Akon with spousal support.

While he previously revealed that he had seven boys and two girls, the divorce documents have proved that he has nine kids.

Akon, according to E! Online, has been very vocal about having several children, often comparing himself to Nick Cannon.

He previously stated that he does not see an issue with someone having several baby mamas as long as the kids were well provided for, like in his case.

According to People, the musician has always been open about his polygamous way, saying that it was a part of his culture.

The Lonely singer believed that there was a flaw in the American culture, creating marriage rules when men were polygamous by nature.
