Kenyan musician Kevin Bahati has resurfaced online after weeks of criticism over his failure to deliver a KSh 1 million pledge to the Harambee Stars.

The singer, who initially promised the cash prize during the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN), has now shifted blame to FKF vice chairperson McDonald Mariga, even going as far as leaking their private WhatsApp chats.

Ahead of Harambee Starsโ€™ crucial CHAN group stage clash against Morocco, Bahati and his wife, Diana Marua, had flaunted KSh 1 million in cash on social media.

He boldly promised to hand over the money to the national team if they secured victory immediately after the game.

Against the odds, Kenya beat Morocco despite being a man down, and Bahatiโ€™s pledge immediately came under scrutiny.

However, weeks passed without the players receiving the money, sparking backlash from fans, celebrities, and even some of the players themselves.

Critics accused Bahati of chasing clout, while others questioned why he was not honouring his word.

Resurfacing online, Bahati flaunted KSh 3 million in cash, insisting that he had no intention of backing out of his promise.

He argued that his delay was caused by tight schedules, including family vacations and brand partnerships, not dishonesty.

According to the singer, his attempts to follow up with Mariga on how to hand over the pledge went unanswered.

Bahati leaked screenshots of WhatsApp conversations between himself and Mariga, suggesting that Mariga’s not picking up his calls or responding to his messages was the reason for the delay.

In one message, dated Monday, August 18, Bahati wrote:

The leaked chats also showed Bahati sending multiple follow-up messages without receiving any replies from Mariga, even as late as August 24 after the team had been knocked out of the competition.

Meanwhile, Mugithi singer Samidoh playfully teased Harambee Stars players about Bahatiโ€™s unfulfilled KSh 1 million pledge.

After spending time with him over a game of pool, Samidoh joked that it was clear Bahati had no intention of paying up.

The Toxic Love hitmaker even went as far as joking that Bahati might instead reward them with mangoes.
