Beatrice Chebet Explains Emotional Reason Behind Tears as Faith Kipyegon Won Fourth 1500m World Title
Beatrice Chebet opened up on the emotional moment that brought her to tears as Faith Kipyegon stormed to her fourth world 1500m crown.
Faith Kipyegon was not the only highlight of the womenโs 1500m final at the World Athletics Championships; her best friend, Beatrice Chebet, moved fans as she tearfully cheered her on.
Faith Kipyegon cruised to her fourth world title, clocking 3:52.15 to cross the finish line in first ahead of compatriot Dorcus Ewoi, who came in second in a personal best time of 3:54.92. Australiaโs Jessica Hull came home in third in a time of 3:55.16.
Faith Kipyegon won her first world title in 2017 in London, Great Britain, before winning silver at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, after coming back from maternity leave.
The three-time Olympic 1500m champion then reclaimed her title in 2022 in Eugene, Oregon, before successfully defending her title in 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
Beatrice Chebet has since opened up about what was going through her mind as she watched Faith Kipyegon place another 1500m title in the bag.
Beatrice Chebet, the 10,000m world record holder, revealed that many thoughts were running through her mind as she watched Faith Kipyegon cross the finish line in first place.
The double Olympic champion pointed out that she watched Faith Kipyegon in action even before she started her career, and seeing her continue to dominate gives her hope.
Beatrice Chebet pointed out that most of the athletes Faith Kipyegon started her career with are no longer running, but the 1500m world record holder has maintained her consistency, something that got her emotional.
โFaith and I have created something, like you have to love and support each other. For me, what I was thinking about Faith, being consistent for that long, is not easy. She won her first gold in 2017, and you find most of the athletes who were running together then are not there,โ Beatrice Chebet told reporters in an interview at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
โHowever, for Faith, getting that energy again and getting that fast time on the track, she motivates young people and seeing her continue to win races gives me hope that my future is bright.โ
Beatrice Chebet added that going into the championship, she wanted to finally win her first gold medal and owing to the fact that she was doubling, she wanted to reign supreme in both of her races.
โMy main target going to the World Championships was to get a gold because in my career, I only had a bronze and a silver,โ Beatrice Chebet added.
โGoing to double, I had to aim for top honours and push myself beyond the limits, and Iโm so happy because I made history. It was not easy, but I have been so consistent, and I think I have done my best.โ
The 5000m world record holder now takes a break from competing, looking to spend time with her family and best friend as she plots for next season.
