Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes insisted he was solely responsible for his penalty miss against Fulham, despite an unusual collision with referee Chris Kavanagh just moments before his spot-kick.

United were held to a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage, with substitute Emile Smith Rowe cancelling out an own goal from Rodrigo Muniz.

But the defining moment came in the first half when Fernandes blazed a penalty over the bar after Calvin Bassey was adjudged to have fouled Mason Mount inside the box.

As Fernandes stepped up, referee Kavanagh accidentally bumped into him. While the Portugal international admitted the incident unsettled him slightly, he was clear the miss was down to his execution.

“No, as like everyone you have your own routine,” Fernandes told BBC Sport.“That put me a little bit off my nerves but it’s not because of that why I missed. I missed because I kicked the ball very bad.”

The midfielder later told Sky Sports he was more annoyed at the lack of an apology from Kavanagh than the contact itself.

“It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise. That’s what triggered me in that moment but that’s not the excuse for missing.”

Manager Ruben Amorim backed his captain, saying the miss had more to do with Fernandes’ high standards than the referee’s involvement.

“He’s not used to missing penalties,” Amorim said. “He felt a huge responsibility and that weighed on him.”

At the other end, Bassey described the decision to award the penalty as “harsh”, claiming he was simply too strong for Mount.

“I still think it’s harsh. I was trying to stay strong, but when you’re in the game sometimes it looks more aggressive. On another day, maybe the ref doesn’t give it,” the Fulham defender said, before cheekily adding of Fernandes’ miss: “I’d say it was justice! I didn’t think it was a pen. It was a bit of relief.”

The result leaves United ruing missed opportunities, while Fulham walk away with a point they will feel they earned after a disciplined display.
