Busia County โ€“ October 2, 2025 โ€“ Security agencies have launched investigations after a 24-year-old man was found dead in a police cell at Tangakona Police Post, in what officers have described as a suspected suicide.

The deceased, identified as Moses Barasa, had been arrested earlier in the day for allegedly stealing six bags of dry maize.

According to police reports, Barasa was being booked at the report office when he suddenly bolted out of custody. Witnesses said police officers and members of the public chased him before residents caught up with him and beat him. Officers eventually rescued him and escorted him back to the station.

Later in the afternoon, Barasa was discovered dead inside the cells. Police say he allegedly used his shirt to hang himself from a window grill.

The body was moved to the local mortuary pending a post-mortem examination. Officials confirmed that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been notified and will participate in the probe.

The case has once again raised questions about the safety and accountability of suspects in police custody, with rights groups urging thorough investigations.

The Tangakona case comes just days after another suspect reportedly died in a police cell in Migori County under similar circumstances, sparking renewed public concern.
