The latest sector statistics from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) show that several telecommunications companies recorded a decline in mobile subscriptions
In its Fourth Quarter Sector Statistics Report for the 2024/2025 financial year (AprilโJune 2025), the CA notes that Airtel shed 869,534 subscribers (-3.54%), while Telkom lost 297,204 (-25.49%) and Equitel (Finserve) dropped 11,966 (-0.79%).
Only Safaricom and Jamii Telecommunications gained mobile subscribers. Safaricom added 1.7 million new subscriptions, pushing its customer base to 49.9 million, up from 48.2 million in the previous quarter, while Jamii Telecommunications grew its base by 16,617 subscribers (+2.34%).
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) attributed the growth to rising demand for e-services, financial inclusion, and social connectivity, alongside the continued migration from feature phones to smartphones. This shift has boosted internet access, accelerated data consumption, and deepened digital inclusion across various sectors. The combination of affordable devices and enhanced infrastructure has sustained momentum, embedding online services more firmly into both social and economic life.
Furthermore, as of June 30, 2025, Kenya had 58.5 million internet subscriptions, with the majority (78.2%) on mobile broadband. This was a 27.3 per cent increase from 52.5 million subscriptions in June 2024.
Safaricom still leads in internet subscriptions with 34.3% whilst key challengers include Jamii Telecommunications (20.6%), Wananchi Group (12.7%), and Poa Internet Kenya (12.5%).
Smaller providers such as Ahadi Wireless, Vilcom, and Mawingu Networks account for niche segments, while Starlink has entered the market but remains at under 1% share.
Safaricom was also the market leader in mobile money subscriptions with 90.9 per cent.
Domestic voice traffic is distributed among operators as follows: Safaricom (63.4%), Airtel (36.3%), Telkom (0.1%), Jamii (0.05%), and Finserve (0.08%). For SMS traffic, the shares are: Safaricom (88.5%), Airtel (11.5%), Telkom (0.03%), Jamii (0.004%), and Finserve (0.02%).
