In a ground-breaking move for African football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has introduced Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024, currently being hosted across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
For the first time in CAFโs historyโand among the first in global sports organizationsโaccredited journalists attending CHAN 2024 press conferences can now access real-time multilingual audio interpretation using only their mobile phones and audio devices.
The innovative system allows media professionals to listen to live press conferences in their preferred languages without the need for bulky headsets or complicated equipment.
Upon arrival, journalists scan a QR code, which opens a dedicated browser link where they can tune into live interpretation channels, each managed by professional CAF interpreters.
According to CAF, no journalist will miss a message due to language limitations reflecting the commitment to innovation, inclusion, and ensuring African football speaks to every corner of the continent and the world.
The initiative is executed by CAFโs Language Services Unit, led by Patrice Godonou, who emphasized its accessibility and efficiency.
โIt is simple, cost-effective and above all, accessible, allowing journalists to follow and record in real-time using only their phones and earphones,โ Godonou added.
The rollout of RSI is part of a wider strategy by CAFโs Communications Division to enhance media services at CHAN 2024.
Other improvements include enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity, better digital content distribution, and expanded match day operations to serve the more than 800 accredited journalists covering the tournament.
The technological upgrade comes as CHAN 2024 enters its crucial phase, with quarterfinal matches scheduled for Friday, August 22 and Saturday, August 23.
With innovations like RSI now in place, CAF is not only elevating African football on the pitchโbut also transforming how the sport is covered, accessed, and experienced off it.
