Kakamega Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party elections have been postponed after rowdy goons forced their way into polling rooms following Governor Fernandes Barasa’s boycott of the elections.

Speaking to journalists, Nabii Nabwera, a contestant in the election, said Barasa chose to boycott the exercise after realising defeat, which allegedly disrupted the process.
However, the ODM electoral team, led by returning officer Isaac Litali and other officials, agreed to conduct the polls through secret ballot boxes.

Governor Barasa, on the other hand, insisted on using the outdated mlolongo (queue) system.
Furthermore, the accusations sparked unrest among our supporters, who promptly disrupted the process, leading to the suspension of elections until further notice.
Nabwera condemned the act, saying that those who disrupted the process were feeling defeated. He vowed to continue mobilising his supporters so that he would win the seat.
He said the will of ODM delegates will not be intimidated by an individual who has been overwhelmed by the activities within the party.
He urged delegates to stay calm as the party directs its elections board to arrange for another free, fair, and transparent election.

On the other hand, delegates said they will not be forced by someone whom they don’t like, adding that they have the mandate to pick a leader with skills, not an imposter.
Returning Officer Isaac Litali confirmed the cancellation of the elections, stating that one contestant declined the secret ballot process and wanted the outdated mlolongo queue tactic to be used, which resulted in confrontation, and no elections were held.
Governor Barasa, however, had declared himself the winner, saying that he would make sure the party’s agenda was anchored.

Barasa added that his competitor, Nabwera, and other officials intended to manipulate the polls, which led him to announce himself as the Kakamega ODM Chairman.
The event was graced by Kakamega ODM members of Parliament, led by Christopher Aseka, Elsie Muhanda, and other dignitaries.
