Chelsea have been charged by the Football Association with 74 alleged rule breaches concerning agent payments between 2009 and 2022, during the period when the club was owned by Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea have made headlines in recent years with their lavish spending, especially following Roman Abramovich’s sale of the club to the Todd Boehly-led consortium and the private equity firm Clearlake Capital.

The Blues have not won the Premier League since 2017, but they have secured the Champions League, UEFA Conference League, and the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

The alleged breaches relate to regulations regarding dealings with agents, intermediaries and third-party investments in players primarily between the 2010/11 and 2015/16 seasons.

The signings of Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto’o and Willian form part of the investigation.

Abramovich sold the club after being accused of having close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose country invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The Blues are now the second major club in England, alongside Manchester City, to be charged. Pep Guardiola’s side are still awaiting their punishment after being hit with 115 charges.

Chelsea could face a transfer embargo, points deduction, or a fine. However, due to their cooperation, they may avoid a sporting sanction, per BBC Sport.

The Blues were fined ยฃ8.6 million (KSh 1.5 billion) for breaching financial rules between 2012 and 2019.

Chelsea have spent the most money among Premier League clubs since the takeover, and some fans have been calling for the club to be investigated, claiming they may have breached Premier League financial rules.
