The Education Cabinet Secretary, CS Julius Ogamba has decried the diminishing use of libraries by both students and adults and which is attributing to poor reading culture.
While addressing the public in Homa Bay County, the CS said many students nowadays read to pass exams or excel in a project, then stop after the outcome of the examination results.
โReading is there as a lifetime a tribute but students nowadays read to pass examinations alone. Most of them stop after schoo.โ He said.
Ogamba challenged parents and teachers to influence their children to embrace reading culture when they are young by visiting libraries with them especially during the weekends.
The CS who led many political leaders and other government dignitaries, represented President William Ruto to preside over a funds drive for Dr. Ida Odinga Ogande Girlsโ School Library.
He was hosted by Homabay County Governor Gladys Wanga and other leaders from Migori,Kisii and Siaya Counties.
Dr. Ida Odinga speaking at the same event said that the library project has been her long tine dream which has become a reality as she steered the Ogande Girls School alumni to champion it.
She said that the project goes beyond library because it will be a beacon of research, innovation and empowerment of many generations in the region and beyond.
She said that her vision and colleagues to start the project was to honor and celebrate education as the only true passage of progress and thanked God for sustaining her to date to see their dream come to pass.
The funds drive was also graced by Senate speaker Dr.Amason King, the Personal Assistant(PA)to President Ruro Farouk Kibet, Honabay Senator Moses Kajwang and all Members of count Assembly from the region.
