Nairobi County MPs have threatened to table a no-confidence motion against Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya over the upcoming military recruitment exercise set for next month.

Senator Edwin Sifuna, who leads the Nairobi delegation, said the exercise discriminates against city residents because authorities allocated only three recruitment centers. The lawmakers argue that this decision could allow outsiders to infiltrate the exercise, further sidelining Nairobi youth.

The MPs revealed they had already written to CS Tuya to raise the concern but received no response. They warned that unless their demands are addressed, they will block the nationwide recruitment.

โ€œWhat we are saying to the CS is we are going to censure her. We wrote to her, she has not responded and we want her to tell us what is this discrimination against Nairobi,โ€ one MP said.

โ€œIf this does not change we will stop the recruitment of KDF officers in the entire country unless Nairobi is treated in the same manner as the other 46 counties,โ€ he added.

Last week, eighteen Members of Parliament from Nairobi constituencies demanded an immediate review of the exercise to create recruitment centres in all 17 constituencies in Nairobi to better accommodate applicants.

In a statement issued on September 16, they gave the Ministry of Defence an ultimatum to respond within seven days and warned to escalate their action if their complaints are not addressed.

According to the recruitment timetable, Nyayo Stadium will host Embakasi East, Embakasi West, Embakasi North, Embakasi South, Kamukunji, Makadara, and Starehe recruits. Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani will host candidates in Kasarani, Ruaraka, Mathare, and Roysambu, while Jamhuri Grounds will be hosting Dagoretti North, Dagoretti South, Langโ€™ata, Kibra, and Westlands recruits.

The MPs said that consolidating recruitment into just three venues will create a logistical nightmare, especially when other counties have centres in every sub-county.
