Nairobi, Kenya – August 15, 2025 – Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has quietly jetted back into the country after a highly successful tour of the United States, where he met Kenyan diaspora communities, rallied political support, and delivered speeches outlining his vision for the nation’s future.

Dr. Matiangi arrived in Nairobi early Wednesday morning and headed straight to his home in Karen.

While in the US, Matiang’i made a passionate appeal to Kenyans living abroad to back his 2027 presidential bid, urging them to take part in shaping Kenya’s political direction. In a widely circulated speech streamed on YouTube, he boldly declared, “I am a presidential candidate in 2027,” vowing to lead a transparent, accountable, and people-centered government.

Speaking to Kenyans living in Baltimore City, Dr Matiang’I said he will ensure that all government officials are held accountable for their actions if he becomes President.

“I want you to join me in making Kenya great again. We cannot build the future of Kenya without the diaspora,” stated Dr Matiang’i.

“I want to be very frank with you. I believe I can offer better management and coordination of government than what we’re currently seeing. With ten years of experience as a Cabinet Secretary four of those spent coordinating government functions—I understand government like the back of my hand,” Dr Matiang’i said.

While in Maryland, Matiang’i held a closed-door meeting with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, a move that has sparked speculation about emerging political realignments.

“We discussed several issues affecting our country, Kenya, and our liberation cause. Our focus remains strong, and our commitment to the people of Kenya is unwavered. God bless Kenya,” Gachagua stated.

After leaving office in 2022, Matiang’i kept a low profile, working with international organizations including the World Bank. His re-emergence, signals the start of an active political campaign phase.

With his return, attention now shifts to how Matiang’i will translate his US momentum into domestic political influence. Will he join forces with the opposition or run as an independent reformist candidate? As Kenya approaches the 2027 General Election, observers at home and abroad will closely watch his moves.

His return comes at a time when Kenya’s political environment remains tense.  Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has also unexpectedly ended his political tour of the United States and is set to return to Kenya.

In a statement issued on August 14, Gachagua described his US visit as “very successful and fulfilling,” citing meaningful engagement with Kenyans in the diaspora. However, he expressed regret over not completing his planned multi-state itinerary.

Gachagua’s return comes at a time when the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already scheduled the by-elections for November 27, 2025, prompting his party to move quickly in consolidating its grassroots campaign machinery.

While in the US, Gachagua made statements accusing President William Ruto’s administration of security failings, including alleged collusion with Al-Shabaab. These remarks drew a sharp response from Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who demanded that Gachagua record a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

Murkomen condemned the allegations as “reckless and dangerous,” warning they could damage Kenya’s international standing.

Political analysts argue that the November mini-polls will serve as the first real litmus test for the united opposition.  A strong showing especially for Gachagua could establish him as a key opposition force, while a solid performance by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) would reinforce Ruto’s political dominance.
